Clearwire is finally bringing its 4G or WiMax services to New York City and Los Angeles as parts of the cities have sorta gone live. Of course, we’ve already been seeing a little 4G/WiMax action in NYC as of late as some Sprint users have been seeing the lightning fast network light up in various parts of the city. While neither service provider has officially launched in NYC or L.A., the soft launch and signs of testing means it’s going to happen very soon.
According to PC Mag:
The company is giving selected “early adopters” dual-mode 3G/4G modems, but warning that 4G isn’t fully built out in either city, company spokeswoman Susan Johnston wrote.
Early adopters who want to try Clearwire’s service will pay $35 for the first two months and $55 for each following month, with a two-year contract required. The company is making no promises as to when 4G will be fully available in the two areas, except to say that it will be by the end of the year.
So it could still be a while before everyone gets that WiMax goodness, but for those in areas where there is coverage within either of the two cities, it could be a good deal.
Additionally, Clearwire is looking to open a retail store in Queens, New York this year, which could mean even more coverage for potential Clearwire customers.
