BT has launched a new mobile app for its broadband customers allowing them to automatically connect their smartphones to the firm’s network of 1.6 million hotspots across the UK.

The application is called BT FON and it’s available as a free download for iOS (iPod Touch and iPad will work just as well) and Android-powered device users.

In addition to the mentioned auto-connect feature, BT FON also comes with mapping capabilities, helping you find a hotspot nearby.

As you may know, BT has two kinds of Wi-Fi hotspots – BT Openzone and BT FON. The former is installed in places such as airports, hotels, coffee shops, motorway service stations and city centres; while BT FON is the operator’s Wi-Fi sharing community that allows users to share connections.

Commenting on the new app launch, John Petter, managing director for BT Retail Consumer, said: “This free app makes accessing Wi-Fi so simple you don’t even have to think about i. This represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are using their mobile phone to access the Internet.”
