The Samsung Epic 4G, the best of the Galaxy S devices, is receiving an OTA update that will enable the company’s Media Hub service, as well as some bug fixes. This comes at the perfect time, as Samsung is said to announce the service and the Galaxy Tab later tonight.

Some of the things you can expect to see within this update are:

  • Optimized, HotSpot in 3G idle mode to help conserve battery power
  • Optimized, Applied Qualcomm patch for performance enhancement
  • Added, Media Hub
  • Modified, WiMAX exit delay
  • Modified, UI “Noisey” One to “Noisy One”
  • Fixed, 32GB mSD card is not recongized when formatted in device
  • Fixed, When playing video, the playback is paused if a headset is connected/disconnected
  • Fixed, Sorry popup when DRM file is selected in the Gallery
  • Fixed, Hotspot registration/deregistration

The OTA update is mostly bug fixes, as you can see, but the introduction of the Samsung Media Hub is something to get excited for. The Media Hub will allow users to download movies and TV shows right from the phone. Prices for the service will range from $3 a day for rentals and $12-$20 a day for movie purchases.

Some may question the success of Media Hub with services like Netflix soon coming to Android. For now, it sounds like a good idea for those media addicts who’d like to take advantage of the gorgeous 4 inch Super AMOLED display found on the Galaxy S devices.

Samsung will be announcing the service later tonight, along side with the North American versions of the Galaxy Tab Android tablet. Mr. (annoying) Jim Cramer just said on CNBC’s Street Signs, that no one will care about the Samsung tablet.

Well, Cramer, we beg to differ. While the Galaxy Tab, and Android in general, lack the ecosystem found with Apple products, the Galaxy Tab has a lot going for it. From its size/portability, connectivity ports, and overall better specifications of the iPad, the Galaxy Tab is a real challenger, no matter how you spin it. We know that Apple will likely release a refreshed version of their iPad – it’s what they do. But until that happens, Samsung is in a good position and it will give users a great alternative to the iPad.

If you have the Samsung Epic 4G, and have yet to receive the OTA, do the following: From your homescreen, hit Menu<Settings< Software Update. Once you do that, you should be notified that there is an update available for your phone. So get to downloading!

We’ll be covering the Samsung announcement tonight, so stay tuned as we give you up to the minute coverage!
