BlackBerry In-App Ad Platform and Microtransactions Launches for Developers

RIM has followed-up on the advertising platform and in-app purchaces announced at the last BlackBerry Developer Conference with an official launch. RIM aims to keep things simple, open, flexible, global, and inclusive (as far as ad networks go) with the new program, which can be implemented in BlackBerry apps with as little as three lines of code. Networks working with RIM include Amobee, Jumptap, Lat49, Millennial Media and Mojiva. Developers will get a 60% cut of ad revenues made through the program.

The BlackBerry Advertising Platform consists of an SDK that developers use to integrate with their app, a mediation console where developers can decide which ads they pick up, and a stable of ad networks to pick from. The advertising announcement is coupled with another money-maker for developers: a Payment Service SDK, which offers in-app microtransactions.

Combined with the announcement of free BlackBerry app analytics tools, in-app ads will be able to be as highly-contextualized or easy-to-implement and indiscriminate as the developer likes.
