Tablet maker Kno has announced that they will be releasing a 14.1-inch tablet aimed for educational purposes. The “super textbook”, also called the Kno tablet, will allow students to buy e-textbooks and store them on the tablet, saving bag space and money.
The newly announced tablet will have just a single screen, but a dual-screened variant is on the way and will cost under $1000. The device will support a plastic stylus for note-taking, and will be able to run educational applications. No mention of the base OS for the tablet, but it’s likely proprietary, offering much less than what you’d find on many of the upcoming Android tablets or the iPad. That said, it will also provide a web browser and multimedia playback capabilities.
As far as specifications go, Kno left many in the dark. We’re hoping they 14.1 inch display has a decent resolution to provide a decent viewing experience on the Kno, but since it main use will be textbooks, we would be surprised if the tablet suffered in the PPI area. We’re glad to see a company focusing on students, but we’re wondering if a 14 inch tablet is a little big. Surely students won’t complain about its size since they won’t have to hold 8 textbooks in their bag, but it does seem rather large.
Both tablet devices are said to be available by the end of the year, but an actual date was not given. Kno claims that those who purchase the dual-screen version of the device will see a return on their investment within 13 months.
Osman Rashid, chief executive and co-founder of Kno had this to say,
“Even though the Kno pays for itself in 13 months, the smaller upfront investment of the single-screen version will allow more students to use our learning platform,”
So there will benefits from both purchases, and we’re interested to see if these tablets will catch on with the students. As for me, I think I’ll hold off to see what comes out in the beginning of next year. So Kno thanks.
