Sony Ericsson Windows 7 Phone is on the roadmap

Sony Ericsson is trying really hard to get a decent slice of the smartphone market. We know they’ve dropped Symbian support and that their commitment to Android is as strong as ever. What about Windows? The Swedish-Japanese handset maker already offers several devices running Microsoft’s mobile OS, including the Xperia X1 and X2.

The company’s CEO mentioned we should expect “big surprises” from Sony Ericsson in the next few months. Meanwhile, CTO Jan Uddenfelt said: “Android is definitely our focus, but we have not given up on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, although it had a bit slow to take off. But Windows 7 Phone is on the roadmap.”

So what should we expect? The Xperia X3? I can see a market for such a phone — which has both a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and a big touchscreen. However, at the end it’s all about the execution and I’m sad to say that neither of the existing Xperia Windows phones was a smashing success for Sony Ericsson. There was always something missing, either the capacitive touchscreen, the phone was too pricey or it just lacked that sexy look and feel. Lessons are hopefully learned and the next Windows phone from Sony Ericsson may rock. Can’t wait to see it…
