One thing many people may have noticed about their shiny new G2 is that the Google Goggles application never updated correctly. When you try to update the app, it returns a “update not successful” notification, and you’re stuck on the version it shipped with. Well, that’s now a thing of the past as we now have an app that will remove Google Goggles so you can reinstall it from the Market and get official system updates going forward.
In order to remove Goggles, you need two things, the temp-root app VISIONary, and the Google Goggles Remover app. Both are very easy to use since all you have to do is launch them. Once you have both apps downloaded, do the following:
- 1. Launch VISIONary, and wait for it to root the device, temporarily, of course. (To confirm that you’ve been rooted, check in your application drawer to see if you have the Superuser application. Icon with the Android skull and crossbones)
- Launch Google Goggles Remover. The G2 will reboot itself twice after the application is launched, so be patient.
- Once the G2 is done doing its thing, go check out your application drawer to find that Goggles is no longer there.
- Go to the Android Market and install the newest version and you’re good to go!
While it’s annoying that Google or T-Mobile have yet to address this issue themselves, it’s cool to know that we actually didn’t need them at all. The Android developers are always cooking something up, and many times have gotten us where we want to go before anything official goes out. Hopefully this will be just the thing we need to get some of the pre-installed bloatware found on the G2.
Be sure to give the developer some love, too. He’s been a big part of many Android projects, and it doesn’t seem like he will be stopping any time soon.
