How-To: Install iOS 4.2 On Your iPad Right Now!

When it comes to my iPhone, I can honestly say I use it heavily on a daily, if not, hourly basis. As for the iPad, unfortunately it doesn’t get quite as much love as my iPhone 4 and I blame Apple for not making iOS 4.2 available for the iPad as soon as iOS 4 was available for the iPhone. Multitasking, folders, and a number of other improvements in iOS 4 are just a tease since the iPad can’t do any of those fancy shmancy things until its 4.2 update goes live. I don’t know about you, but I think Apple is taking too damn long to make 4.2 available, so I say we take matters into our own hands and install 4.2 on our iPads right now!

The process is fairly simple and pain-free, as long as you don’t have a jailbroken or unlocked iPad. And for sanity’s sake, please make sure you backup your iPad before attempting anything like this just in case something goes terribly, terribly wrong. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Step 1: Download iTunes 10.1 Beta. The links to the Mac and Windows versions of the software can be found below:

  • Mac
  • Windows x86
  • Windows x64

Step 2: Install iTunes 10.1 Beta onto your computer of choice. Duh.

Step 3: Download the iPad IPSW file below:

  • IPSW File

Step 4: Pry the iPad away from your significant other as they’re most likely half watching Glee and surfing the net on your iPad.

Step 5: Plug your iPad into your computer. When iTunes recognizes it, hold down the Option key for Mac OSX, or Shift key for Windows while clicking on “Restore.”

Step 6: Choose the IPSW file that you downloaded a moment ago. After the process is complete, your iPad will now be running iOS 4.2.

Step 7: In order to obtain all of the apps that you had installed on your iPad before the upgrade, you’ll need to restore your iPad from a backup sync.

Step 8: Enjoy iOS 4.2 on your iPad, you lucky devil!
