thin film batteryEveryone knows what a battery looks like. Even though they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they all have one thing in common – bulk. That is, until this new battery was announced. This new power source is super thin and flexible, and can recharge in 60 seconds! The polymer-based “organic radical” battery will purportedly last through 1,000 charge cycles and is just 200 nm thick. Apparently, those Japanese scientists have been able to overcome the obstacle of keeping the charge on a cross-linked soluble polymer when it is “spin-coated.” Bravo and props to those guys! Hopefully their breakthrough will allow for super-ultra-amazingly thin mobile phones (among other things), with lcd screens that double as batteries.
