The EVO 4G may still be the best smartphone on the market in terms of specifications these days, but that hasn’t allowed it to go without its fair share of problems. From battery life to screen issues, the EVO’s issues range from annoying to critical. Unfortunately, one more may have recently come to light.
Apparently some users are reporting that their handsets have gone all wonky when trying to use their web browser on the data network. Be it 3G or 4G, many users can’t seem to get data working at all, and a reboot does not fix the problem. Some are saying that the issues are only when they try to access Google mobile sites, where others say they simply can’t access any data services. Interestingly enough, it looks like most of these issues are coming from a certain part of the country. Most reports are coming in from Chicago, Ohio, and Michigan, with some in Tennessee also having the same issues. While this could be extended much farther, is looks like this is where most of the reports are coming from.
Calling Sprint won’t yield a proper answer, either. Many who’ve called and complained of the issue were just told to perform a factory data reset and see what happens. Wiping the phone may actually get the desired results, but that shouldn’t be your first answer. It’s likely Sprint’s network, and not the phone itself, but no one seems to know what exactly is going on here.
If you have yet to, try turning the phone onto Airplane mode, and let it sit for a moment, then turn it off. This has fixed data issues for me sometime. But, if a reboot doesn’t work, Airplane mode doesn’t sound like it’ll be a fix either, although it’s worth a try. If this issue persists, we imagine Sprint may have to actually address it. Let’s hope it doesn’t have to come to that.

Sprint contacted us to let us know that the data connectivity issues were indeed real, and that it affected Android users. Apparently, “Sprint fixed a firewall issue which was impairing Android traffic and services became available again on 11/9/2010.” If you’re still having issues, you should contact Sprint, but chances are good that everything is honky dory at this point.
