Looks like some T-Mobile G2 users are having trouble previewing and downloading Gmail attachments, specifically, some G2 users are having problems viewing JPG image attachments. The problem doesn’t seem to be effecting all users, but it can’t be a good thing for those that are plagued by this bug.
So the issue seems that when a user is sent a JPG image through Gmail, previewing the picture only give the user the “fetching attachment” pop-up, and just sits there. This also reportedly happens when the user tries to download the image as well.
It looks like this has been an issue for sometime now, as the first post in the T-Mobile thread was written in on September 30th. So it looks like this wasn’t an issue caused by the recent OTA that was sent out that enabled tethering and WiFi calling.
I tried multiple times to replicate this issue to no avail. I tried sending an image from my computer to my Gmail account, as well as have someone send an image from their phone to my Gmail account, both of which were able to be previewed and downloaded. It looks like this is a bug that has merely resurfaced within the G2, as Engadget reports that they had received a tip from someone claiming this issue has been around since the G1 was a relevant piece of kit.
The recent OTA for the T-Mobile G2 gives the user the most recent version of Gmail, which is a nice upgrade from previous versions with its subtle, extra features. The only bad thing about that is that if you are now experiencing this issue with the new version, you can not downgrade to the previous version. Well, you likely can if you’re rooted, but that’s a whole other story that we won’t be getting into right now.
So what’s causing this? No clue, but Google is fully aware of it, and is still looking into the issue. That’s a long time to not fix a very annoying bug, but hey, at least our phones will wake us up on time.
