Vodafone and Orange have announced plans to share mast sites, whilst still competing with one another – the joint sites are apparently due to start later this year.
Both 2G and 3G coverage will be involved in the scheme, and it is understood this will mean about 15% less sites – equivalent to about 3000 less masts.
The companies were keen point out that whilst they were co-operating, they were not amalgamating!
Comment: this has got to make good business sense – dropping that many sites is going to have a big impact on overheads, right across the board – and it’s got to be better for the enivronment also…
