A new report from M:Metrics says that although more people are playing mobile games, the amount downloading them has stayed the same. This apparently can be explained by the fact that more people are using to, and sticking with, the games that come preloaded on their handsets.
The research also found that from UK, France, Spain, Germany, and the USA combined, 98.4 million people played a mobile game in DEC07 (quite how they arrive at this figure I would LOVE to see – ed.) – of these, 3/4 chose to just play the embedded game, rather than download. On average, only 8.8% of people played a game they downloaded – with the highest being Spain at 12.7%, and lowest being the French at 3.5%.
Comment: recently there seem to have been conflicting reports about how many people are playing mobile games – I for one am a downloader, although it has to be said that my most recent download was for Tetris, which I must have downloaded 20 times across different devices – oh, for flexible DRM! Perhaps we are waiting for the next big thing in gaming before it takes off again – right now feels like we are on a bit of a plateau. I wonder if N-Gage will be the new incendiary……?
