Samsung may launch two wide-format foldables in 2027, and that’s a big deal

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been selling so well that Samsung apparently can’t keep shelves stocked. And now, instead of just rolling out a straightforward sequel, the company looks like it’s ready to take things further. Much further.

According to a report from SamMobile, Samsung is planning to release five foldable smartphones in 2027, and buried in that lineup is something genuinely interesting: two wide-format, book-style foldables. One of them is the expected Galaxy Z Fold 9. The other one? Nobody knows its name yet, and that mystery actually matters. The name would tell us a lot about where Samsung wants to position it, whether that’s as a cheaper alternative to the Z Fold 9 or a more premium option sitting alongside it.

The rest of the 2027 foldable lineup fills out pretty predictably. Samsung is expected to also release the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 9, and Galaxy Z TriFold 2. Those are all logical follow-ups to this year’s models. But two wide-format devices in a single year? That’s the part worth paying attention to.

To understand why this is significant, look at where Samsung started. In 2024, the company launched just two foldable phones total. Now it’s planning five. That growth tells you everything about how confident Samsung has become in this category, and honestly, how much the market has matured. Foldables used to feel like expensive curiosities. Now they’re a real product segment with real consumer demand behind them.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 was a turning point specifically because of its 4:3 aspect ratio display. That wider screen made the phone feel less like a gimmick and more like an actual productivity tool. Consumers noticed. So did Samsung’s sales numbers. Launching a second wide-format device suggests Samsung wants to either expand access to that form factor at a different price point, or push the premium end even harder with a more specialized option. Either move makes sense given the momentum.

There are still a lot of unknowns here. We don’t have specs, pricing, or even a confirmed name for that mystery wide-format device. A 2027 launch means we’re still a long way out, and plans change. But the broader direction is clear: Samsung is betting big on foldables, and the wide-screen book-style design is where it sees the most opportunity.

For anyone who’s been on the fence about foldables, more options at potentially more price points can only be a good thing. Competition within Samsung’s own lineup could also push the company to be smarter about pricing and features. So yeah, 2027 is shaping up to be a very interesting year for foldable fans.
