Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets stock Android 2.2 Froyo OS

Still pissed that the Xperia X10 may never get some fully functional multitouch capabilities? Well, this may not be the answer to that problem, but those looking for a skinless experience for your X10 now have a stock Android 2.2 Froyo ROM to play around with. That is, if you like playing around with ROMs that aren’t yet fully functional.

The X10 comes out of the box with a custom user interface from Sony Ericsson that’s really nice to look at – when it works. The Timescape and Mediascape apps, as eye-catching and innovative as they are, can become a bit sluggish at times. That makes for a user experience that’s less than spectacular. This new ROM answers the prayers of those who have been pining for a stock/vanilla Android ROM for the X10, something with a more pure Android experience that doesn’t suffer the slowdowns associated with homescreen skins and bundled apps. That said, this ROM is hardly final, and may give you more hell than SE’s custom skin for the time being.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s working and what’s broken:

Working:

  • Flashable onto device
  • Root achieved
  • Backlight
  • 2D
  • 3D
  • Power management
  • G sensor
  • ADB enabled at boot (usefull for debuging)
  • GPS
  • GSM
  • WIFI
  • Camera
  • Bluetooth
  • 3G data conection – new
  • Audio – fixed
  • HDPI
  • Video playback (RockPlayer included)
  • Audio player (RockPlayer included/download PowerAMP from market)

Not working:

  • Video playback
  • Phone dial out loop
  • Black/white camera mode
  • Codec’s are messed up

This release is only for tester’s at the moment, and is nowhere near ready for daily use. We’re sure the devs responsible for this ROM are hard at work to get all the bugs fixed and make it as stable as can be.

There’s also a stock Android 2.1 Eclair ROM available, and you can dual-boot it with the Froyo ROM if you’d like to check it out without having to reflash a ROM. Do try to remember that this won’t be the best experience for your X10, but if you’re curious you might want to give this a try. You’ll need 1GB of free space on your SD card, and of course have your X10 rooted with busybox installed.

Sounds like something you’re willing to try? Hit up the XDA-Developers thread to install it yourself!
