Hong Kong-based CSL has launched the commercial LTE services, becoming the first operator in Asia to migrate to the next-generation technology. Initially, the new network offers only “corporate services” with consumer offerings planned for the first quarter of next year “when [LTE] devices start entering in the market.” At the moment, the network lives across 50% of the Hong Kong population, but that figure will definitely expand in the months to come.
With around 2.7 million connections, CSL — which BTW is owned by Australia’s Telstra — is the second largest mobile operator in Hong Kong.
Commenting on the LTE prospects, the company’s CEO Joseph O’Konek said: “For the first time in 30 years the industry has a global standard. You will feel the difference on LTE; now we have the bandwidth we can finally offer all those things we’ve been talking about for years.”
He also added that LTE was required to support rising levels of mobile data traffic at CSL, which is currently quadrupling year-on-year and accounts for 80% of total traffic on the network…
