Samsung unsure about Galaxy S Android 2.3 update

The Samsung Galaxy S with Android by GoogleSamsung can neither confirm nor deny updating Galaxy S handsets to Android 2.3 in the future. Perhaps it might be a little frustrating to Galaxy S variant users – Fascinate, Vibrant, Captivate and Epic 4G – who are still stuck on Android 2.1. The manufacturer built the Nexus S for Google, which will be the first Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone, and so Galaxy S users might have been hoping for the same software treatment on their handsets. But will they get it?

Samsung’s answer doesn’t inspire much confidence, but it doesn’t instill a whole lot of doubt, either.

The Galaxy S maker told Pocket-Lint:

“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).

“Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors.”

It seems that it’s an issue that the manufacturer will have to consider before making the leap, but that ought to be pretty obvious to most of us. It’s really more of a non-answer, if you ask me.

Samsung continues:

“If Samsung decides to make the Update available to the users after such consideration, Samsung will use its efforts to develop such Update, which may be released to the users upon successful completion of such development”.

Let me simplify Samsung’s response for you, “We’ll consider it, and maybe we’ll make it available. Maybe we won’t. It depends.”

Thanks for the clarification, Sammy! The bottom line here is that Galaxy S owners shouldn’t hold their breath for the possibility of an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update any time soon. After all, it took a while for Froyo to get out and not all handsets have it just yet.
