It’s not a secret MIPS has been looking to enter the smartphone and tablet space. ARM processors are currently dominating the landscape with Intel’s x86 trying to get its slice of the pie, too. More players mean more choice and that effectively leads to lower prices which is always a good thing.
During this year’s CES, MIPS Technologies will be showing MIPS-based mobile devices in its suite. The company will have both smartphones and tablets on display, which are based on systems-on-chips (SoCs) from MIPS licensees such as Actions Semiconductor and Ingenic Semiconductor.
One MIPS-based tablet is already available – it’s Velocity Micro’s Cruz Tablet which could be bought from various e-tailers for about $200. The Android-powered device features the Ingenic SoCs.
