Sony Reader app for Android is here, requires 2.2 or later

Back in November we said that Sony will launch its Reader app for the iOS and Android devices. Those with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will have to wait a bit longer, while Android smartphone and tablet users can already start e-reading. Supported formats include books from Sony Bookstore as well as ePub and PDF files.

There is a catch, however. Sony’s app requires that your device runs Android 2.2 Froyo or later. That’s kinda strange when we know that some of their phones — including Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro — won’t get OS updates beyond 2.1 Éclair. Guess the mobile app division doesn’t communicate with their handset making unit…

If you do qualify — i.e. you’ve updated your smartphone to Froyo — search for “sony reader” in the Android Market and take it from there. That’s presuming you care to have yet another ebook reading app installed on your device…
