Well, it’s not much of a surprise, but LG has confirmed that it will be showing off a glasses-free Optimus 3D phone at Mobile World Congress in a few weeks. While it didn’t outright say this will be an Android phone, every other Optimus phone has used the Android platform, so it’s not much of a stretch to think it will be powered by the little, green robot.
Glasses-free 3D doesn’t really work with movies or televisions because these are large screens with multiple viewing angles. The Optimus 3D gets around that though because it will be a small screen compared to those and most people hold their devices within a foot or two of their eyes. This stuff works too – the Nintendo 3DS has proven that small-screen glasses-free technology can work well.
What’s even more interesting is that the new LG Optimus will also be able to record videos in 3D with its dual rear cameras. With the DLNA support baked in, you should be able to stream this content to other 3D-capable devices. It also looks like the upcoming LG G-Slate Android Honeycomb will also have cameras capable of recording in 3D, so there will be more content to view.
Not much is known about the exact specs of the LG Optimus 3D but the leaked photos today suggest it will rock a dual-core processor (probably Tegra 2), at least a 4-inch screen, and a front-facing processor.
It’s not known what, if anything, developers will have to do to optimize apps for this new format but this could be the next big leap in mobile computing. Of course, it could also just be a wild gimmick but we’re dying to try it out. Luckily, team IntoMobile will be at Mobile World Congress, so we’ll let you know what the deal is.
We also heard from a tipster that the new LG Optimus will be coming to Sprint at its Feb. 7 event, so that’s another thing to look forward to.
