HP has just released webOS 3.0 SDK preview for tablets

HP announced a new line of devices yesterday during its event, and today it is quickly following up with webOS 3.0 SDK. After seeing the Pre 3 and Veer, I thought, “OK, they seem like decent successors to the Palm Pre and Pixi.” But when I saw the TouchPad, it was a different story. Here we had the first webOS tablet ever, something many Palm fans had been waiting for, and it turns out to be a decent competitor to the king – Apple’s iPad.

While specs and the demonstrations impressed, the one thing lingering in my mind was, “But what will apps be like?” You can put the fastest tablet with the highest resolution on earth in front of me, and I won’t be likely to use it or buy it if it doesn’t have some killer apps. What else would I do with it, surf the web and send and receive e-mail all day?

Luckily, developers can get to work early and quickly now that the webOS 3.0 SDK preview has been released. In order to get in on that action, developers can send an e-mail to pdc@palm.com.

The new operating system looks very impressive, if a bit Apple-esque in some cases, but definitely much better – in my opinion – than what I’ve seen come out of Android 3.0 so far. Getting software done correctly for tablets is key, and it looks like HP and its team got it right with this first iteration for the TouchPad.
