Samsung has apparently confirmed that the Galaxy S 2 and Tab 10.1, both announced at Mobile World Congress, will be able to talk to Samsung TVs over a secondary tuner to stream video to the portables. Currently supported TV models include the D7000 and D8000, with more likely coming in the future.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb, has a 2 megapixel camera on the front and an 8 megapixel shooter on the back, is powered by a dual-core 1 GHz processor, and the display clocks in at 10.1 inches and 1280 x 800 pixels. The Galaxy S 2 updates Samsung’s TouchWiz UI to 4.0 on top of Android 2.3, includes a front-facing camera for video conferencing, and also runs on a dual-core processor. The phone has an 8 megapixel camera on the back to capture 1080p HD video, and a big ol’ 4.3-inch and impressive 960 x 540 resolution. Our hands-on video of that one is over here.
This could be great for when you don’t want to buy another TV altogether just for the kitchen, or, y’know, the bathroom. Details are slim, so it’s not entirely clear if older Samsung devices could get this feature enabled later on, but we would certainly hope so. One way or the other, tying in with an established and powerful presence in home electronics is an excellent way for Samsung to add some value to their mobile brand (though it’s a strategy that both LG and Sony Ericsson are also executing).
