What looked like a potential Droid X successor has just fallen into the “disappointing” category. We’ve been hearing rumors of the upcoming Droid X 2, but you won’t be finding it here, as it looks like the picture above only shows a change in the external storage of the existing Droid X. For some reason, SCK refers to the new variant as the “Droid X2.” Turns out, the company’s internal codename for the DX variant likely isn’t the real DX2.
Apparently the memo above refers to a variant of the DX, sporting a smaller microSD card, and bearing the confusing “Droid X2” moniker. Initially the handset shipped with a 16GB microSD card on board, but it’s now shrunk to 2GB, and still manages to retain the same price. Don’t get us wrong, we love the Droid X, and it’s still a decent price for what it is, but shaving off 14GB of storage just seems like penny pinching to us.
The real DX 2 should pack a punch, and will indeed add features, not remove them. Rumor has it that the updated handset will sport a single-core 1.2 GHz CPU, and 768MB or RAM, along with the latest version of Motoblur. If the rumors turn out to be true, the handset may be dead on arrival before it’s release, as Motorola has bigger, and better phones they have been putting their focus on. Just as the Droid 2 was an incremental update to the original, the Droid X 2 doesn’t look like it’s going to be a sizable upgrade.
Motorola wants your money, just like every company vying for your attention, but they likely want you to be interested in handsets like the Atrix 4G or Droid Bionic. These powerful handsets are highly advanced, and can likely trounce most other smartphones on the market today. So if you’re looking for a solid upgrade to your Droid X, don’t expect the sequel to be much different. That said, we still know very little about the upcoming device, so hopefully some of the rumored specs have been bumped up along the way.
