A leaked document suggests Verizon Wireless may drop its one-year contract option effective April 17th. Currently, the wireless carrier offers subsidized pricing on handsets with a two-year contract or a one-year contract. In the past, handsets purchased on with a one-year option cost $50-$100 more than those purchased with a two-year contract. The one-year plan was available through Verizon retail outlets (not third-party locations like Best Buy) and was popular among technophiles who upgraded their handsets often.
According to the document, a select few business customers and Verizon Wireless employees will be eligible for the one year option. For the rest of us, you will have to choose to pay full retail or sign your life away for two years. This is not a welcome change for those looking to always have the latest and greatest handset.
