Android devices don’t get the same love as other operating systems when it comes to updates. Virtually all handsets using the OS are running an older version of Android and timelines are never as clear as we wish they would be. That said, sometimes test ROMs for the official update leak online and can make the wait a little easier. Well, Droid Incredible users, your Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is waiting for you.
Test ROMs like this are exactly what they sound like – test ROMs. The software itself may not completely finalized and bugs can still linger throughout, but these ROMs can also be very usable, too. The ROM was initially just the source code of the leak but the awesome Android developers out there have already repackaged the leak into an easy to install, flashable zip file.
Even though HTC handsets on Verizon tends to be the most frequently updated Android handsets, the Droid Incredible has gone a while without receiving any tasty updates lately. Once the ROM is available to install easily, users may be able to gauge just how far along HTC is with Gingerbread for the handset.
Google is looking to put inconsistent Android updates to rest with the introduction of Ice Cream Sandwich and a newly formed group to tackle the issue. Whether or not this will actually bring more consistent updates to the table remains to be seen, but anything is better that what Android users have to deal with now.
