T-Mobile G2X to get Android Gingerbread treatment by summer

When the T-Mobile G2X was released, the carrier claimed that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update would become available shortly. Well, since its release the only Gingerbread the handset had seen is the leaked version of the official ROM and custom ROMs from developers. Luckily, T-Mobile recently announced on Twitter that the update will be available by summer.

The leaked update we saw not long ago was running Android 2.3.3, but in the time that it takes T-Mobile and LG to push the update out to handsets we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the build get bumped up to Android 2.3.4, which has the native video chat client through Google Talk. The update should also address some of the issues people are experiencing, like random reboots and other quirks in the software.

While T-Mobile is hard at work getting the update ready for its users, some have gone the way of custom ROMs like CyanogenMod 7 to get their Gingerbread fix. While still in the “nightly” stage (unstable), the ROM is coming along quite nicely and is almost ready for daily use. This should be enough for users who want to get a taste for the latest and greatest without having to rely on the carrier to send it out.

With the first day of summer not even a month away, we can only hope T-Mobile will push the update in the beginning of the season. Vague timelines such as this can get people excited only for their expectations not to be met. If you’re not one to install custom ROMs on your phone, we’d say just expect the update to hit at the end of summer so you’ll be surprised when it’s sooner. Or not.

Are you using a custom ROM like CyanogenMod on your G2X or waiting for the real thing?
