RIM has ported over one of their smartphone apps to the big screen on the PlayBook today. BlackBerry News lets you pick feeds from your favourite sites, or discover news ones through a categorized collection, and see what’s happening in a nicely laid-out format. BlackBerry News for the PlayBook ties in with BlackBerry ID, so if you had been using the app on smartphones and already have your feeds all lined up, they’ll port over to the PlayBook automatically. Likewise, if you add feeds on the PlayBook, they’ll be updated on your phone too.
Tapping on a story will give you the full text and a headline image, and there’s an option to launch the full page in the browser. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many functions beyond that, like sharing to Facebook or Twitter, marking to read later, and there’s still no Google Reader synchronization, which is a feature that for me will keep GeeReader at the top of my list. For more casual reading, it’s certainly more stable than the likes of Feed Wheel and Glimpse, if not as graphically rich as News360.
In any case, you can find BlackBerry News for the PlayBook in App World over here.
