Apple iOS 5.0 works well on iPhone 3GS

The Apple iOS 5.0 software will be bringing 200 new features when it lands later this fall but there was some concern before it was unveiled that it wouldn’t work with the iPhone 3GS. That fear appears to be misplaced though, as early versions of the beta software show that it works pretty well on the 3GS, even if a few features are missing.

As you can see in the video below, iOS 5.0 seems to work pretty well on an iPhone 3GS. You’ll notice that the brand-new notification bar is active and looks elegant and responsive, the deep Twitter integration is there and the overall speed and performance seems pretty good.

Of course, it’s not all roses though, as it appears there are a few missing features so far. The improved camera app on the iPhone 3GS will give you the grid lines but it doesn’t appear like you can edit photos on it yet. Likewise, the Safari browser appears to be missing the tabs options, which is kind of a shame.

It’s still very early though, as iOS 5.0 isn’t expected to land until the Fall, so Apple has plenty of time to optimize this for the older hardware.
