Bungie, the game developer behind the world-renown Halo franchise, has released their first iPhone app, called Bungie Mobile. Halo: Reach fans will be able to track their stats (including progress towards commendations), follow friends, and keep up to date with the latest Halo news. There’s also talk about some kind of online swag bag, which I’m pretty curious about. Bungie promises that this is only the “first, super cute baby step” into the world of smartphone apps, and that we can expect some more ambitious stuff further on.
As much as I’m a big gamer, I could never really get into the Halo thing. First-person shooters always felt like more of a PC thing for me, and even if I could deal with console controls, there’s so much smack-talk and teenagers that spend every millisecond of their free time on Xbox Live, that there wasn’t much room for me to squeeze in. Regardless, I know that there are a ton of Halo junkies out there, and this app will be an exciting new option for them. Other games, like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, are going all-out with subscription-based apps, but free is always a good place to start. Even more ambitious developers are putting full MMOs onto mobile devices
In any case, Halo players can get Bungie Mobile for free in the iPhone App Store.
