Nokia to change how they name devices yet again, switching to BMW-like 500/600/700 series model numbers

Does anyone remember their first Nokia and how it used to have a model number that seemed like a random string of 4 digits? That changed back in 2005 with the introduction of the Nseries, then several years later with the Eseries, and more recently there’s been the Cseries and Xseries. Just as we’ve started getting used to the new labeling scheme, rumors suggest that it’s going to change once again. Looking to copy BMW, who has a 1series, 3series, 5series, 6series, and 7series lineup of automobiles, Nokia will introduce a 3 digit naming convention that will use 5XX, 6XX, and 7XX for future product codes. The Nokia 500 is set to ship in Q3 of this year, have a 3.2 inch screen, 1 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, and cost under 200 Euros. The Nokia 600 will have a 3.2 inch AMOLED screen, 1 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, NFC, and will cost roughly 260 Euros. And finally, the Nokia 700, the cream of the crop, will be 8.8 mm thin, have a 3.2 inch AMOLD screen, 5 megapixel camera, NFC, and will cost just under 300 Euros.

You know what they say, a rose by any other name … but seriously, from the leaked N5 images we saw earlier today, we’re pretty curious (possibly even excited?) to see what the next version of Symbian will look like. Some are calling it an update to Symbian Anna, others are calling it Belle, we just want to know how Nokia plans on pushing 100 million more devices out on the market to a populous who knows that the platform is going to be killed at some point in 2012. To steal from Sarah Palin, changing your product names is the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. In this case Nokia is the pig and Stephen Elop is the annoying over the hill woman working at your local shopping mall who keeps asking other women if they want a free makeup sample or their hair straightened.
