Nokia cutting smartphone prices in Europe

If you’re taking a beating from the likes of the iPhone and Android, one of the ways you might be able to compete is to cut prices. That appears to be Nokia’s strategy right now, as it appears to be cutting prices by about 15 percent for many of its smartphones in Europe.

“There are no very big cuts per model, but the scale — across the portfolio — is unseen for a very, very long time,” said one of the sources, who works at a European telecoms operator, to Reuters.

The cuts appear to impact devices like the N8, C6 and others and it makes a lot of sense to cut the prices of these because we should also start to see the next crop of Nokia devices soon. The broad price cut across the portfolio is an interesting move, though.

The next major release should be the Nokia N9 but we’re still hearing reports that the company’s first and only MeeGo phone will only be available in limited quantities.

The next major phase in Nokia’s business will be the Windows Phone era, as we have already seen some early glimpses at what these products will look like. We expect a Nokia Windows Phone to land before the end of the year and the company will start to produce these phones at scale in 2012.
