Has the Green Lantern movie and the upcoming Batman sequel got you thinking about comics? Or maybe you’re an old-school fan, gearing up for the San Diego Comic-Con? Either way, you’ll be happy to hear that DC has released an official comics app for Android powered by the well-established folks at Comixology. Individual issues for $0.99 and up, and purchases will be a breeze thanks to in-app billing, PayPal support, and interoperability with issues bought through any other Comixology apps. The selection spans over 3,000 comics from DC, including subsidiaries Vertigo, Wildstorm, and Zuda.
Webcomics were something that came up in my top 10 list of TouchPad apps, and though I haven’t been into the old printed ones since being able to enjoy my brother’s collection, there’s always going to be a soft spot for some of the classic heroes. Piracy has become a bit of a problem for traditional comic creators, but hopefully with the right digital outlets like this appp and some reasonable prices, real fans will be able to keep the business alive. I’m curious if DC or Marvel would ever go the same route as modern streaming music services and offer all-you-can-eat access for a subscription fee. Would any diehard comic fans be interested in that kind of thing?
The Android app joins the iOS version currently available for iPad and iPhone. Tablets are a good fit for comics, and I suspect support for Android 3.0 Honeycomb won’t be too far away for DC Comics. Marvel is also on iOS, but it looks like DC has a leg-up on their long-time rival in landing on Android. Comic fans can get started with the new DC app in the Android Market.
