Pictures: Modified HTC Sensation has a chromed out body, and it’s not that hard to do it yourself

Despite there being a slew of choices out there for which mobile phone you can decide to spend your hard earned dollars on, you still end up with something that millions of other people use. Kind of a bummer if you’re the type of person who likes to stand out from the crowd. This problem is only exacerbated if you’re an iPhone user since there’s only one new model released every year. Cases and phone charms go only so far, some folks want something that is genuinely unique, and Paul White is one of those folks. He took apart his HTC Sensation, something we don’t recommend you do since it’s an insanely expensive piece of kit and there’s a strong chance that you’re going to break the damn thing, and took some sand paper to the Sensation’s frame, polished the hell out of it, and below you can see the results. It’s pretty … if you’re into the ultra chromed out look, and if you want to replicate his results then just follow the simple instructions he posted on his blog.

Now this makes us wonder, whatever happened to custom covers? Not that long ago you could buy a Nokia feature phone and get a replacement body that came in all sorts of funky design patterns. This writer even had a clear case so you could see the inside of his mobile phone, along with a battery that had a grid of LED lights that would start convulsing into a seizure every time a call came in. Those were the days when raves were the be all end all social gatherings for teenagers in America.

What do you guys think, should handset vendors return to the era of mass customization, or is this new world of non replaceable batteries and impossible to take apart mobile phones here to stay with us?
