T-Mobile G2X Android Gingerbread OTA begins to hit handsets

The T-Mobile G2X is finally receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update that users have been impatiently awaiting. The handset has been out of stock for a long time now, and while T-Mobile will have you believe it’s due to its popularity, we have trouble believing that now, as it’s been about two months. Nonetheless, the handset will soon be receiving a OTA update to give users an official taste of Gingerbread.

So besides Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, what else doe this update bring your G2X? Well, according to the T-Mobile forums, not a lot. That said, what is included is more than welcomed.

Great news G2x community! On July 25, T-Mobile G2x devices will begin to receive an Over-The-Air (OTA) update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

This update will provide the following benefits:

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS
Improved battery life
Improved front-facing camera operation when using Qik record and share
Improved disabling Car Home
Helps address unexpected reboots

I must confess, I regret with my G2X purchase. I’ve had more problems with this handset than just about any other Android phone I’ve touched before. Installing custom ROMs can alleviate the random reboot issue but the battery life remains one of the worst I’ve ever seen on custom ROMs. This is why I’m actually excited to try the latest update from T-Mobile, but I’ll obviously wait for a rooted version of the update.

The G2X isn’t a bad phone, mind you.  The handset was one of the first few handsets to ship with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor, making it a blazing fast handset. Unfortunately, the phone has been giving people problems since day one, it seems, and hopefully the official update will address the issues that are found throughout the handset.

If T-Mobile and LG didn’t get it right with this update I’ll happily be throwing it back into Magenta’s doors and wait for the Galaxy S 2 – whichever version comes out first. Don’t get me wrong, I really like this phone. It just needs to work properly.
