You may have picked up a discounted HP TouchPad this weekend but if you didn’t, you may want to check out this preorder on Amazon because it shows that the next version will soon be coming out.
The HP TouchPad 4G was announced last month and it should look nearly identical to the first webOS tablet, save for some branding. This tablet will be coming to AT&T and it will be packing HSPA+ 4G, a boosted 1.5 GHz processor and what appears to be a $700 price tag. Of course, that figure will probably come down when AT&T offers an on-contract subsidy but I would be surprised to see this land on AT&T for less than $500 or so.
Some may say that HP has bungled its webOS lineup so far, as there was a lot of excitement when we first saw the TouchPad and new line of webOS phones in February but it’s clear that the buzz is fading. When it finally landed in July, the software still wasn’t ready and the hardware was good but not great – check out our full review for a deeper dive into the webOS tablet.
HP did recently push out a major software update for the tablet which makes it much more stable and usable but we still don’t know how well the device is selling despite the strong media campaign. One thing is clear: HP didn’t spend $1.2 billion on Palm to just give this one shot and call it a day. Expect many iterations of the TouchPad to land over the next few years.
