Microsoft kills off Deepfish

As Microsoft prepares to release their revamped Internet Explorer Mobile web browser for the Windows Mobile platform, it seems that the company’s mobile browser Deepfish has been canned. Back in the day, Microsoft promised the mobile community full-HTML browsing with their still-developing Deepfish browser. Deepfish never opened up beyond a limited beta program and was subsequently overshadowed by the full-HTML mobile web browsers like Skyfire and Opera Mobile/Mini.

And, with the revamped Internet Explorer Mobile 6 using the desktop version of Internet Explorer’s codebase to make mobile web browsing as smooth as possible, Microsoft has deep-sixed their Deepfish browser.

But, Microsoft isn’t exactly looking at the Deepfish death as a defeat:

“When we began working on Deepfish [in 2006], we set out to prove our theory that there was an unmet demand for a better mobile browsing experience than what was available. It wasn’t our intent to create a full browser for the preview, but rather simply demonstrate that a novel and simple new user experience was the best way to achieve that. And now, thanks in part to Deepfish, many better alternatives are emerging.”

Full-HTML web browsing on your mobile is now a reality and it seems we have Microsoft to thank, at least in part, for making it all happen.
