Coming fresh off the company’s recent news of its bada SDK 2.0, Samsung today unveiled three new Wave smartphones based on its bada operating system, which highlights the new flagship model Wave 3, and includes a software client for the company’s new messaging service ChatOn.

The Wave 3 will abandon the plastic casing found on Samsung’s Android-operated Galaxy smartphones, in favor of a more durable metal case. Wave 3 features include:

  • 4-inch Super AMOLED display
  • 1.4GHz processor
  • 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash
  • 720p video recording
  • Internet over Wi-Fi (802.11b, g or n) or HSPA
  • Social Hub and Music Hub

Also, Sammy plans to have ChatOn as a dedicated app, a service which mirrors BlackBerry Messenger, allowing users to chat with their friends and colleagues. ChatON will be demonstrated at the IFA show, according to Samsung. Alongside the Wave 3, Samsung also announced the Wave M and Wave Y, which are also based on Bada 2.0 and have NFC capabilities as an option. These models represent Samsung’s new naming system, which follows a chart of each phone separated from the best to worst performed handsets, S>R>W>M>Y. All three will be on display in Samsung’s booth at IFA 2011 in Berlin.

Not much is known if any of these phones will actually hit the United States, but maybe Sammy will shed some more light on these Wave phones during its Galaxy S 2 event in New York City tonight.
