As part of its strategy to step further into services, Intel acquired Telmap, which we best know as a provider of white-label location-based services used by carriers around the world. Among their clients are some of the world’s largest mobile operators, including AT&T, Orange (France Telecom), Vodafone, Vodacom, SFR, Telefonica-O2, MTS, SingTel, OPTUS and others. Under the terms of acquisition, Telmap will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group.
Telmap will keep its multi-platform approach, with Intel saying that location-based services will span “devices, operating systems and CPU architectures.” In other words, we could see Telmap-based software running on everything from feature phones, smartphones, tablets and netbooks to fancy new ultrabook computers. What’s more, it’s kinda given Telmap-based navigation will be pre-loaded with the brand new Tizen OS, eventually helping the platform get some traction (which it needs badly).
AppUp developers on their end will soon be able to access Telmap APIs…
