Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich not coming to LG Optimus 2X?

Well, this doesn’t bode well for LG. Recently the handset-maker confirmed on Facebook that the Optimus 2X will not receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, even though it was only released in January of this year. This likely means that the T-Mobile G2X won’t be getting the update, either.

Back when we reviewed the Optimus 2X and T-Mobile G2X, we had very few negative things to say about the dual-core toting handsets. With the Optimus 2X being the first dual-core phone and managing to get itself into the Guinness Book of World Records, the future looked bright for the handset.

After a rather glowing review of the T-Mobile G2X, the problems began. Random reboots, or just shutting off in the middle of the night and weird bugs found throughout, even as a “stock Android” handset, it was easy to see that LG didn’t spend much time on squashing bugs. Or something. I’ve talked to multiple people with the handset, all saying they have experienced the same problem, yet the reasoning behind T-Mobile pulling the device from shelves was due to its popularity? Sounds fishy to me.

The one thing that we do love about the two handsets is NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor but we haven’t seen any sort of problems with other handsets that have the same CPU, so we can only assume these bugs are LG’s doing, or lack thereof. In a nutshell, buying the G2X was one of my most regretted phone purchases in the past two years. That said, I know I’ll only buy Nexus devices from here on out.

Even with the bugs found throughout the handsets, we’re still scratching our heads as to why these devices won’t be able to receive the Android 4.0 update. Could it be a lack of RAM needed to run smoothly? What’s the deal? Luckily, when LG announced that its mid-range Optimus devices wouldn’t be receiving the Gingerbread update, enough bitching changed its mind. Let’s hope the same thing happens this time around.

LG was likely expecting a shitstorm after this, and that’s likely what it will have on its hands for some time now.

So, Optimus 2X/T-Mobile G2X owners, you may need to wait for custom ROMs if you want a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. How do you feel about that?
