360-degree panoramic video shot by bundle of Android phones

The Xperia Studio, where we saw some artists on a boat in Copenhagen use a flamethrower as a camera flash, now has a fresh addition. Seven Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo handsets were mounted onto a bike, and taken for a ride through Slickrock Trail, in Utah. Thanks to some custom Bluetooth pairing software, video captured from each one was stitched together to create a 3D panorama video – think of it like Street View in motion. The bike rig was made with a 3D printer after a lot of failed prototypes, but the real interesting thing is the software. The developer said that it could act as “a boilerplate for a real-time, multi-source streaming application” whereby multiple shooters of the same event could combine their video into one experience. That’s a neat idea, especially if it had some Photosynth-style social image recognition plugged in so you wouldn’t even have to know who else was shooting video at the event to have your stuff stitched together with theirs.

I’m starting to become a big fan of the Xperia Studio because the phones Sony Ericsson is trying to promote really comes secondary to answering the question “what can we do with phones  that hasn’t been done before?” Be sure to swing by the Xperia Studio to see which other projects Sony Ericsson has been facilitating.

You can watch the whole panoramic video over here, or get the overview of the project in the video below.
