DoCoMo creates joint venture for mobile chips

It looks like Qualcomm better watch its back, as NTT DoCoMo is creating a joint venture with five major players to create semiconductor products for mobile devices.

According to DoCoMo, the joint venture will include Fujitsu, Fujitsu Semiconductor, NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Samsung Electronics and it will be a fabless company, which means the actual production of the chips will be produced by another company. The joint venture is going to be called Communication Platform Planning Co and it will be focusing on LTE and LTE-Advanced chips. The full details still aren’t finalized yet.

The move will give Qualcomm some much-needed competition in the wireless chip space but it will be tough for the joint venture to fully displace the incumbent players, even with the heavy hitters like Samsung on board. Additionally, companies like Intel are also planning to make a major push into the wireless space.
