Let me preface this by saying I hate cases for my phones. While great for protection and the accident prone, most cases just cover up the beauty behind a handset that took over a year to make. iPhone 4 users knows what I’m talking about. Still, I had to do something with my new Galaxy Nexus, so I began searching for a case, expecting to be very disappointed.
After spending $30 on possibly the ugliest silicon case for the Galaxy Nexus at a Verizon store, I decided to check the XDA forums for any accessories that I may be missing out on. A particular post caught my eye, which said that a genuine Samsung Galaxy Nexus case is now available online.
Skeptical at least and hopeful at best, I check the case out online, which didn’t look like anything special. Still, the two days I had with the silicon case I got from Verizon was three days too long, so I decided to pull the trigger and see what was so “genuine” about it.
After getting back from CES, I had forgotten about the case and promptly opened it up. The case itself doesn’t look like anything special but it does have “Galaxy Nexus” all chromed-out in the back, with a vented backing. I snapped it on and fell in love. This is definitely the case I was looking for and it adds virtually no bulk whatsoever.
The box of the case doesn’t claim anything about being a genuine case (surprise, surprise) but I don’t really care. The top and bottom are left open so you can still see some of the Galaxy Nexus’ design and for easier access to the ports on the bottom. Some may not like the lack of protection on the top and bottom, however.
This is definitely not a genuine Galaxy Nexus case but its design is great and should make most people happy who aren’t looking for a crap silicon case. Similar cases have been made for the Galaxy S II, which also claim to be “official” but who cares? If you like it, that should be good enough. The case itself is only for the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus, so if you’re rocking the Verizon version, look elsewhere.
Overall, this hard case will likely stay on my Galaxy Nexus for the foreseeable future.
