Apple has launched a recycling service in the UK, allowing users to either get some cash for their old gear, or if the hardware they have doesn’t have any value – recycle it for free.

Run by Dataserv GmbH, the Reuse and Recycling Program accepts all Apple-made devices — including iPhones, iPads and Macs — and will wire you the value of the device directly to a bank account.

Whether it’s an iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC computer, working or not, we’ll take it and determine if it qualifies for reuse and has a monetary value. If it does, the amount will be credited directly into your bank account. If it doesn’t, you can recycle it responsibly through one of our free recycling programmes.

That’s all nice but there’s one caveat — apparently, Apple’s recycling scheme pays less than other similar services. For instance, it offered 177 GBP for the fully-working iPhone 4 16GB, whereas competing sites offer up to 244 GBP.

In any case, we applaud the Cupertino-based company for taking this route, eventually making the planet just a little bit greener…
