Official Wikipedia app lands on Android

For years, Wikipedia has been available for iOS, but Android users can now get all that information at their fingertips with an official app.

The app does standard task similar to its iPhone counterpart, as it pulls from the mobile site, letting you bookmark pages or search for entries located near you. The Android version also comes with a few additional features, which includes the ability to save articles for offline use, utilize Android’s “Share” function and view any given article in a different language, rather than switching the language of the whole site.

I didn’t run into any major issues when I tested the app out myself, but I did find my phone’s GPS a little wonky. Like other reviewers have mentioned, there seems to be some problem with the GPS not quitting correctly when the app is closed, other than that, the app doesn’t have a force close issue — so that’s good.

The company has been busy as of late, especially when it comes to its strong opposition to a proposed bill that would shake up the Internet as we know it called SOPA.

That said, if you want to give the new Wiki app go, head over to the Android Market.
