Samsung’s mobile chipset business is booming

Samsung has long been the biggest maker of memory chips, but now they have aspirations of getting into the logic chips market. Logic chips is the “brains” of computers and other digital devices. The Korean-based manufacturer is looking to keep last year’s momentum going, and what better way to do that than become an even bigger competitor to chip makers?

The way the company plans to enact this lofty strategy is by spending 47.8 trillion won ($42 billion) this year on new product research and upgrading plants. This move is sure to make other makers quiver in its boots, because losses will only increase. Samsung is without a doubt a juggernaut in the tech world, which is the sentiment shared by South Korean analyst Kim Hyung Sik.

“We have a Goliath in the technology industry,” said Kim Hyung Sik, a Seoul-based analyst at Taurus Investment Securities Co. “The gap between Samsung and the laggards will keep widening, particularly in memory chips.”

This makes perfect sense for Samsung to get further into the chip-set game, as it can further spread its reach when it comes to consumer electronics. It’s clear that Sammy is aiming to become a one stop destination as a chip maker, as this will make it harder for rivals like Apple to leave them as a supplier.
