MetroPCS discontinues low-end $40 LTE unlimited plan

MetroPCS dropped what was once an unlimited plan of pretty good value. The $40 plan previously offered included unlimited talk, text, and Web for 4G LTE smartphone owners. MetroPCS isn’t replacing it with another low-end option for 4G customers but instead is pushing them toward the $50 and $60 options.

The $40 per month option has been nonexistent for a while, however. A spokesperson for MetroPCS confirmed with FierceWireless that the carrier stopped offering the plan late last year, specifically when it stopped selling the Samsung Craft. The Samsung Craft was the world’s first LTE handset, but it was an entry-level device with poor specs and not much to offer. Now that MetroPCS sells Android smartphones that demand more power, the $40 unlimited plan just wasn’t cutting it anymore.

MetroPCS currently has three different plans for its 4G LTE lineup. The cheapest is $50 per month with unlimited talk, text, Web, email, and 1GB of streaming over 4G — still a great value when paired up with Verizon Wireless or AT&T’s offerings.

For $60 per month, MetroPCS throws the streaming into the pot of unlimited services and adds unlimited access to Rhapsody music. If you’re more of a video person, the carrier has a similar plan for $60 per month that swaps out unlimited access to Rhapsody with its own MetroSTUDIO Video On Demand service.
