Meet the Sony Xperia U – The bite-sized Xperia S

While we’re pretty unsure of anything that Sony will be announcing during Mobile World Congress next week, the fog has lifted slightly and it looks like we have a new handset coming our way. That handset would be the Xperia U aka Kumquat, which looks to be a smaller version of the Xperia S – in size and specs.

The Xperia U has been floating around for some time now but has shown up again just in time for a MWC launch, and right next to its big brother, the Xperia S. The Xperia U rocks a 3.5 inch (480 x 854) display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 5 megapixel camera, 1,290mAh battery, and running on either Android Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich. This handset isn’t filled will bells and whistles as other Xperia devices, but its specs, while still decent, should make the Xperia U on the cheaper side.

As we said before, the handset is pretty much identical to the Xperia S and below are a few pictures to prove just that. From the overall shape, to the transparent lining where you’ll find the capacitive navigation buttons. We’re not sure if Sony has placed the U’s antenna within the lining like the S but we couldn’t imagine why it wouldn’t be there as well.

From what we see, there’s not much to get excited about with the Xperia U, as it’s just a lower-powered version of another handset. That said, if it comes in at a decent price point it could make a splash for first time smartphone buyers.
