Apple’s iPad 3 is going to be announced in less than 60 hours, so I’m not going to bother speculating about what it’s going to be called, how fast it’s going to be, or whether or not it’s going to be 4G LTE enabled. That being said, the folks at Aatma Studio, who describe themselves as a “3d animation and digital content studio specializing in the production of imagery for TV, Film, Advertising and Interactive Media”, have come up with a video showcasing several features they’d like to see in future tablets. Features that are actually possible given enough time. Starting with the most obvious, their iPad has an edge to edge screen with no bezel. Advances in glass technology should make that possible, though I think we’ll see edge to edge hit smartphones first, and then scale up to larger sizes. Second kick ass feature, NFC enabled display bridging. Since this iPad from the future has no bezel, why couldn’t you put two of them together to see more content? I actually saw just such a concept while working at Nokia two years ago.
And as for the final futuristic feature, that one is a bit more insane. Holograms. Need I say more? Aatma Studio has produced some fine work, but like all pretty concepts, who the hell cares if it doesn’t turn into an actual product? Consider this for a second: the iPhone is 5 years old, the iPad is going soon going to turn 3 years old, yet the PC has been around since the 80s. Give technology enough time and dreams will come true, but don’t spend too much time dreaming and not enough enjoying the fruits of the labor that today’s engineers are putting into what’s currently out on the market.
Back to the future now, what concepts do you want to see realized?
