Orange go ‘HD’ with Mobile TV…

Engadget HD has an interesting article, saying that Orange is going to launch a high-definition mobile TV service. Well actually, higher definition (than normal) is more like what Orange means, according to Engadget.

I’ve mentioned about HD on Mobile before, and what exactly the ‘HD’ part means (here) – but anyway, back to Orange…

Apparently there will be 60 channels running on the company’s 3G+ UMA platform – and the first handset that can use this will be the LG Secret KF757 – which will also contain the Orange TV Player – now I’d guess that means proprietary video codecs and/or DRM are involved…. but what we do know about the player however is that an EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) is built-in, and channel ‘zapping’ (channel change) will also be possible (which isn’t usually do-able on a video stream invoked from a mobile portal)

The only thing that isn’t clear to me is which region Orange are going to launch this in – if I had to gamble, I’d go with France – but as and when more detail appears, I’ll post a follow-up.

Mobile HD TV eh? Whatever next!
