Last month we saw a leaked Verizon roadmap saying a device called the “LG Cayman” was going to be released on the 29th of March. Today, thanks to the guys at Pocketnow, we now know that it’s going to be called the “LG Lucid”, and best of all we even a photo of it! What you’re looking at below is an Android Gingerbread smartphone with a 4 inch 800 x 480 pixel display, dual core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera that can also capture 1080p video, and a front facing camera should you be one of the 32 people on the face of the planet who actually video calls on the go. There’s no exact price point yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see this being offered at less than $100. Just for the sake of comparison, the higher end LG Spectrum, which has a 4.5 inch 720p display, dual core 1.5 GHz processor, and an 8 megapixel camera, is going for $199 as of today.

The bigger question is should you even care how much your phone is if you’re going to be signing up for a two year contract? Most folks don’t realize this, but your phone bill doesn’t change whether you have a free phone or a $300 phone. If that’s going to be your device for the next two years, then why not put that $300 on a credit card or something and just pay it off like that instead of struggling with a mid to low end device for the next 24 months? There’s only two devices in Verizon’s portfolio that’d we’d recommend right now, either the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or the iPhone 4S. Everything else is just … meh, for lack of a better word.
What do you think, is buying a midrange device just to save $100 upfront kind of ridiculous? We think it is, but then again we’re not the 99%.
